讲座内容:
M.A.K. Halliday has provided us with a powerful and an empowering theory of language in context: his Systemic Functional Linguistics is one approach to what he came to call appliable linguistics that is now being deployed and developed widely around the world. It is flourishing in the ecosystem of 21stcentury research — e.g. the emphasis on big data, on the study of complex adaptive systems, on the co-evolution of language and the brain and new techniques for studying neurological processes, on network science as a new emergent discipline; but also on trends such as the increasing emphasis on translational research and impactful studies. Here I will try to articulate what is truly unique about Halliday’s theory of language while at the same time foregrounding areas where there are now, two decades into the 21stcentury, increasing resonances across approaches to language. I will view Halliday’s theory of language from a personal point of view, having first engaged with it in the second half of the 1970s, and worked with Michael Halliday on a variety of projects since 1980, when I first met him.
